Vitalia Shchelkanova “Tell me your name”

The photos in this series are selfies taken by different people on an iPad from an electronics store. Each person who turned on the front camera turned out to be a new figure against an unchanged background, which is limited by the position of the device. The result was self-portraits of people of different sexes and ages, shot in the same place, from the same angle. These photographs are comparable to the written names in doorways, on garages, on the railings of bridges ─ in any attractive urban space. And if in this case we only know the name, then in the case of photographs in the hall, only the person’s appearance. This information is insufficient to personally identify you. I see this as an unconscious impulse to anonymous fixation: “I want to stay here just like that.”
